The Complete Guide to Aluminum Windows in Toronto — Profiles, Performance & Pricing

Aluminum windows have become the default choice for modern residential construction and renovation in Toronto. But the category covers an enormous range — from cheap commercial-grade extrusions that will disappoint in a Canadian winter, to precision-engineered European profiles that will outperform expectations for 40 years.

This guide covers everything you need to know to make a good decision.

Thermal Break: The Most Important Technical Distinction

Aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat — which is exactly the opposite of what you want in a window frame in January. The solution developed by European manufacturers is the thermal break: a strip of low-conductivity polyamide inserted between the interior and exterior aluminum profiles, preventing direct metal-to-metal conductance through the frame.

All residential aluminum windows should be thermally broken. A non-broken aluminum frame in a Toronto climate will be cold to the touch in winter, will collect condensation, and will conduct significant heat out of your home. If a supplier doesn't mention thermal break or uses the absence of one as a cost-cutting feature, that's a product to avoid for residential applications.

European vs. North American Profiles

The aluminum window profiles dominant in the North American market were largely developed for commercial applications — curtain wall, storefronts, institutional buildings. They're engineered for cost efficiency and structural performance at commercial scale, not for residential thermal performance or aesthetics.

European profiles — from manufacturers like Alumil (Greece) and Reynaers (Belgium) — were developed specifically for the premium residential market where appearance, performance, and longevity are the priority. The differences are visible: slimmer sightlines, tighter tolerances, better-quality hardware, and more sophisticated thermal break designs.

We supply Alumil and Reynaers systems exclusively for residential applications. The quality difference is not subtle.

Profile Systems and Hardware

Within the Alumil and Reynaers product lines, there are multiple profile systems suited to different applications:

  • Casement and tilt-turn windows — the standard for residential replacement and renovation. Tilt-turn operation (tilt inward from the top for ventilation, swing fully open for cleaning) is standard in European profiles and offers advantages for high-rise and difficult-access applications.
  • Fixed glazing — for large picture windows, sidelites, and applications where ventilation isn't required. Maximizes glass area and minimizes sightlines.
  • Sliding systems — including lift-and-slide for large openings. Different profile families from the casement system.
  • Curtain wall — structural facade systems for commercial applications.

Colour and Finish

One of aluminum's major advantages over UPVC is the colour range. Powder coating can produce any RAL colour — and the interior and exterior faces can be different colours. The most common combinations in Toronto's market currently are anthracite grey exterior with white interior, all-white, and all-black. Metallic finishes are also available.

The powder coating on a quality European profile is applied at 60 to 80 microns dry film thickness — significantly thicker than standard commercial coatings — and carries a 10-year colour guarantee against fading and chalking in normal exposure conditions.

What Do Aluminum Windows Cost in Toronto?

Pricing varies significantly based on size, system, glazing specification, and quantity. As a general range for supply and installation of European aluminum windows in Toronto:

  • Standard casement or fixed window (up to 1.2m x 1.5m): $1,800 to $3,200 installed
  • Larger format windows (1.5m x 2.0m and above): $3,000 to $6,000+ installed
  • Oversized or custom configurations: priced individually

These are general ranges — actual pricing depends on specific dimensions, profile system, glass specification, and site conditions. We provide detailed written quotes for every project.
